Who is Ted V. Mikels?

American filmmaker Ted V. Mikels holds a unique position as one of the most unconventional directors of exploitation cinema. Famous for his eccentric home life (he once lived with a harem in a castle with secret passageways) and promotional gimmicks (he was known for having nurses and ambulances on hand to assist "scared-to-death" moviegoers), Mikels is now considered a pioneering master of low-budget movie making.

Examples of Mikels' influence can be seen everywhere: from music (punk band The Misfits wrote a tribute song called "The Astro-Zombies"), to Mikels' film The Doll Squad being the template for the television series Charlie's Angels, to inspiring the look of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill.

Legendary independent filmmaker Ted V. Mikels is at it again. By the end of September, he will have unleashed his demented Astro Zombies on the world for a third time. Astro Zombies M3: Cloned will be released on DVD nationwide and throughout North America on September 28 by Alpha Video.

In addition to the award-winning film, the DVD contains a number of special features which include trailers, out-takes and behind-the-scenes information, as well as an audio director's commentary.

"Astro Zombies M3: Cloned is pure fun," said assistant director Rob Darren. "It is the third of Ted's movies about the rampaging mutants. The first one came out in 1968, starring John Carradine and Wendell Corey."

In AZM3, the military attempts to clone Astro Zombies, only to lose control of them. They escape from Area 51 and literally go berserk. Government officials attempt damage control, but it is ultimately up to the famed Doll Squad to deliver final justice to the ruthless killing machines.

During a limited theatrical release of the movie in the spring and summer, audiences applauded and cheered throughout the screenings.

Fans have been saying that Astro Zombies M3: Cloned is the best Ted V. Mikels movie ever made. Critics apparently agree.

The original poster art work by second unit director Gary Lester won a Crystal Reel Award for the production last year from the Florida Motion Picture & Television Association.

Then this summer, the Los Angeles Cinema Festival of Hollywood bestowed its prestigious Award of Merit on the movie.

"I am delighted with the critical acclaim, as well as the audience reaction to the film," said Ted Mikels. "I too have watched and enjoyed the movie a number of times, and I believe it's a solid piece of entertainment. Everyone loves the Astro Zombies."
